Notes

1. Review of Actions

VST-TM1-5 ACTION - AR - start analysis of SRM - put up a wiki page for this.

ONGOING: - see ScienceReferenceMissionRequirements

ACTION VST TM3-1 AW check the status of the web service access to the CDS x-match tool

CLOSED: AW reported that ESO and CDS are still working on this.

ACTION VST TM3-2 GL: circulate fuller description of AstroNeural capabilities to the VOTC science team

CLOSED: Further info at http://people.na.infn.it/~astroneural/. Information slides in [.pdf] and background paper from Giuspeppe Longo [.pdf]. Release date is planned for mid September 2005.

NW: is MatLab? required? GL: currently the system requires MatLab?. However, the system is be re-written in C, and thus MatLab? will not be required longer term. Thus the aim is to have a fully portable version by end 2006.

ACTION VST TM3-3 NW: in future add an agenda item to allow input of science priorities from ESAC/ESAVO.

CLOSED: see agenda item here.

ACTION VST TM3-4 NW/ALL Science theme pages.

ONGOING: see also VotcSciStageTwo

2. Science in Stage 01: progress check

DS3 (AR)

AR: progress against deliverable is proceeding to plan.

DS4 (AW)

AW: PAH is deploying a VOStore linking to the ESO NGAS datastore. The cross match tool is also being further developed.

DS5 (MA)

MA: Good progress has been made in the intelligent resource discovery - based on the SPECFIND tool. This work is being led by Bernd Vollmer. This tool automaticsally locates radio specific data sets from CDS and general VO registries, based on the use of UCDs, and this tool then automatically generates SEDs. Current limitation is that it works only on radio data.

SAADA is another DS5 tool which could be relevant in 2006 science cases. AW noted that the ESO report showed that for small projects SAADA could be very useful. Maybe think about using this in database creation of image data behind the cluster of galaxy case.

DS6 (GL)

GL: Much discussion on the DS6 forum re tool interoperability. Focus on visualisation tool, and availability through the AstroGrid Client Runtime. Work is underway to assess the use of VOTable for the transport of large tables. AW that ESO are wrapping binary data with an XML heasder - thus a more efficient way of using VOTable.

3. Science from ESAVO

  • Development of TSAP - theoretical spectrum access protocol - implemented in VOSPEC. Some theory spectra already available - including Pegase.
  • Line access model - implemented in VOSPEC. Example with ISO spectrum - gives line id's from aspectral line database. Using draft data model requirements developed in collaboration with Marie Lisse-Dubernet (Paris)
  • Local implementation of a skynode server to access the XMM-newton catalogue
  • First tests of incorporating XMM EPIC data into VOSPEC

Other activities include the publishing of the ESAC registry.

4. Towards a Science Framework Document

Draft is being developed at VotcSFD

5. 'Stage One' Implementation Plans - science for 2006 - see wiki page VotcSciStageTwo

The galactic case could exploit mainly DS4 and DS5 tools, whereas the clustering of galaxies case will exploit DS6 mining tools.

MA: need to get a good feel for which tools connected to which data sets will be available for use by early 2006.

Aim to have a science team gathering Weds 14 Sep after the main ds meetings to specify in more detail the two main science cases.

ACTION NW: agenda and venue for the sci team meeting

Target Mar/Apr 2006 for a two day workshop - perhaps 20+21 Apr - suggested places NL, I.

ACTION NW: generate workshop proposal.

6. 'Stage Two' priorities

Key implications for the DS areas:

  • DS3:
  • DS4:
  • DS5:
  • DS6:

7. AOB

Next meeting: 09.00 GMT Wed 19 Oct 2005
