DS6 Stage03 Plan

Listed below are the Stage03 activities of each of the DS6 teams.

CDS

• Metadata standards and visualization
  • DAL protocols: SIA extensions in next working draft; new implementations with ESAC and CADC; definition of a Generic Data Set Access Layer and an Access and Views data model.
  • Characterization data model: development of draft after presentation in Victoria; implementations - registry query tool and Aladin server implementation for asteroids.
• PLASTIC: participate in development of lightweight hub and PLASTICization of further tools.
• Miscellaneous: discuss use of k-d trees in VizieR with Bob Nichol; prepare demos for IAU in Prague.

Napoli

Catania

• New graphical features: multiple scalar visualization; animation of a frame sequence from a simulation; built-in sampler on Multi-D
• Quantitative data analysis: instrument tools for geometrical aspects; data measurement; operations on scalars.
• Interoperability: making VisIVO work with PLASTIC/ACR; new VMEs; bidirectional communication with Aladin; filtering in download of VizieR catalogues; interoperation with Astroneural.
• Linux version: resolution of problems and porting of all functionality; new look and feel; support for Debian and Fedora Core 4.
• VisIVO distribution: new web site offering download; new user documentation.
• Dissemination activities: Terena conference (May, Catania); IVOA (May, Victoria); IAU (August, Prague); journal paper.

Leeds

• Develop plan for staged implementation of Eirik within AstroGrid/Euro-VO infrastructure. This is likely to proceed something like the following:
  • Complete the implementation of a client-side Eirik, which works with local VOTable data;
  • Make the client-side Eirik interoperable with other client-side tools through PLASTIC;
  • Develop the server-side version of Eirik, which will work with data held remotely (i.e. in VOStore);
  • Further develop the server-side Eirik, so that it can be deployed with the AstroGrid Data Set Access component, as a standard service offered at data centres.

Edinburgh

• PLASTIC
  • PLASTICization of VisIVO: MarcoComparato to spend four weeks in Edinburgh; UgoBecciani and BjornLarsson to visit briefly during that period, too.
  • PLASTICiziation of Astroneural: AntoninoStaiano to visit Edinburgh during July; UgoBecciani, MarcoComparato and BjornLarsson probably to visit during that period, to discuss interaction of VisIVO and Astroneural through the PLASTIC interface.
  • PLASTICization of other tools - e.g. Gaia, Mirage, DS9, VOSpec? - with the aim of building a critical mass of tools, to aid adoption of the PLASTIC standard.
• k-d trees
  • Run Kernal Density Estimator code using the VOTechBroker: this would be a building block for a wide range of scalable data mining tools.
  • Assess how to offer k-d trees as a data centre service/API.

Cross-DS Activities

• DS4/DS6: collaboration between CDS and ESO on footprint service: IVOA note on definition and inclusion as an SIA extension.
• DS4/DS6: access to 3D data cubes (involving CDS).
