DS4: Cycle 1 Plan

The DS4 group chose to focus initially on a cross matching tool. The first iteration will result in a requirement document covering scientific needs and technical considerations as well as an improved version of the existing CDS cross matcher. A prototype implementation of an advanced cross matcher will follow in iteration 2. Furthermore, it was agreed with the DS6 lead to continue this effort under the DS4 umbrella rather than splitting it up among the DSes.

eof cycle 1 plan

More details are available from the stage 1 meeting presentations. Some info was compiled below for convenience, however, the text was not available to the TAP when it decided upon the stage 1 plan:

Improvements to the existing cross matcher

  1. disconnect it from Aladin and distribute as Java package
  2. support error ellipses (corrects for asymmetric PSF)
  3. add flexibility to define distance function other than geom. separation

Rationale for more detailed specification of INAF science cases

INAF is interested in various scenarios dealing with theoretical data and in ways to compare them with observational data. A study of these scenarios will reveal what it takes to bridge the theoretical and observational domains. As a result we will better understand what kind of interfaces are required and on which technical aspects and use cases we should focus on during the remaining cycles.

WCS augmented graphics files in SIA

Graphics file formats like .png. jpg or .gif are lacking built-in support for a World Coordinate System (WCS). The simple image access protocol does in principal allow to associate the missing information in the query response. Together with the actual image as returned in the retrieval mode it is possible to project also such images as produced by various previewing services onto a celestial coordinate grid.

Longer Term Planning

During the VOTech kick-off meeting an initial set of potential tools was identified. The VO portal and workflow builder moved to the DS3 infrastructure domain meanwhile and the list was further refined after a preliminary analysis of the AVO SRM.

# Tool
T1 multi-waveband image tool
T2 best fitting
T3 SED builder from archival data
T4 positional cross matcher
T5 access to theoretical data
T6 robotic telescope interface
T7 generic source extraction
